‘The Neighbor Was a Spy’
by journalist/radio broadcaster
Cristina Mendonsa, Dec. 6, 2019
Tony Fisher was a personal friend of retired U.S. intelligence agent Colonel Sidney Mashbir – It was Colonel Mashbir’s personal papers that inspired the writing of the historical novel The Emperor and the Spy.
I first had the pleasure of meeting and also interviewing Tony Fisher two years ago. Tony is a true gentlemen and a scholar, retired from a long career as a high school teacher and tennis coach. It was exciting to hear his recollections of his friendship with Colonel Mashbir, when Tony was twenty seven years old and Mashbir was in his seventies.

They held panel discussions on the rise of international tensions in the Southeast Asian Pacific region, issues involved and possible solutions. The event took place on the campus of the University of San Diego, at the Joan Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice…The Emperor and the Spy honors many Japanese leaders who attempted to prevent World War Two.
